Dining du Jour, a startup restaurant marketing application, was a platform for photos and descriptions of daily specials and pushing notifications about them to customers’ social media networks. I designed the logos, websites and print collateral materials, and produced instructional videos found on the website.
We had already used the orange-jumpsuit photo of the guy accused of shooting a Manchester cop after a foot chase, so we didn’t have much art to illustrate this centerpiece. We did, however, have a great quote from another guy who told us about his own violent encounter with the shooter. Sometimes a headline can serve as the primary visual element on a page.
When Shaquille O’Neal and the Celtics came to Manchester for a preseason game — his first visit to New Hampshire — someone asked him if he had ever heard about Einstein, the world’s smallest horse, who was living on a farm in in the state. That gave me the idea to do a side-by-side comparison of the 7-foot-plus Shaq and the under-2-foot Einstein.
We weren’t expecting a photo like this when Thomas Roy went to cover the funeral for the police chief of Greenland, NH, who was killed in a shootout. But this image of a little boy watching for the funeral procession to pass his school was compelling, emotional and completely out of the ordinary, and captured the combination of curiosity and sympathy many of the people watching must have felt.
